The following is a world building project with the goal of developing a kind of magic* system to directly relate personal character progression with specific supernatural and extraordinary effects to support this character progression. This is the concept that spawned the main idea of an Ideal, which will be explained through this page.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
This page is constantly changing. With the exceptions of the foundational elements of an Ideal, all things can be changed given good reasoning. The rules and application of the Ideal should all be a natural development from existing rules, and/or create a good result to pursue the aforementioned goal. In this sense I think about it more as developing something rather than a strictly creative project.
General Premise:
Everything in the world has an “ideal” form/conception of self.
Every molecule has an individual ego. Within a person these egos naturally will cancel out, leaving the unconsciousness as the main determinant of an individual’s ego.
A consciousness has its own ego?
Ego:
Every sentient being has an ever changing impression of their ideal self, called their ego. An Ego manifests by realizing their ideal form physically. For example, if someone’s ideal involves being free and unbound, then their ego may physically manifest to reinforce their speed, or even give them wings. As a being becomes closer with their ego, they may be able to control it by will. Meaning one might be able to specifically manipulate their own body, or physically manifest the ego as they wish. When using the ego to accomplish a goal in line with their ideal, it will be easier to access more power from the ego.
Inanimate object’s ideals:
Objects have an inherent ideal, similar to people. An object’s base ideal is equivalent to its physical self. Because inanimate objects often don’t have their own consciousness, it is possible for an object’s ideal to be altered, causing the physical form to shift accordingly.
- How does somebody interact with these egos?
Magic:
A sentient being, given enough familiarity and effort, may be able to use their consciousness to shape their own ego to resemble that of an ideal of their choosing. To do this, one must first suppress their own ideal, in order to be able to shape it more effectively. Because of this, it is difficult for people with naturally strong ego’s to perform magic unless they have a great deal of control over their ego.
The process of shaping the ego is as follows:
- Possess an understanding the ideal
- Suppress own ego
- Mold suppressed ego into chosen ideal
Ideal’s connection to individuals:
Because egos are individually small, they are able to coalesce into groups representing specific concepts and or social constructs. People connect to these concepts, and get an amount of power based on items under “ego strength”. How this power manifests is dependent on what the individual physically needs to best attain that ideal.
EX: Noxus is a country defined by war. If a Noxian soldier is physically weak, and interprets this weakness to be the most significant barrier in pursuing Noxus’s ideal of war, they will receive power making them physically stronger.
Connection to an ideal is dependent on one’s own perception. Somebody only needs to believe their actions contribute to this ideal to fit it, even if their actions might not actually.
EX: If somebody belongs to an ideal of protecting others, and they act to hurt others, but are disillusioned enough to legitimately believe that their actions protect others, they will become closer to this ideal.
Icon:
Over time Icons are decided based on what is understood to be the physical manifestation closest to the concept.
EX: Darius is the icon for Noxus, meaning that his own ego is synonymous with the ideal of Noxus. The citizens of Noxus, who make up the Noxus ideal, must acknowledge Darius as a representation of the Noxus ideal. An ideal may have no icons, or many depending on its nature.
Strength received from an ideal is defined by:
- Size
- The size of the ideal itself, how many things contribute to this ideal
- Proximity
- How significant one is to the ideal
- Actualization
- How close one is to realizing the ideal
Ego Manipulation:
Someone with a deep enough understanding of ego’s in general, a large amount of control over their own ego, and an ego that is strong enough, may be able to influence other egos. This process allows someone to alter something’s ego, causing a physical change to follow. Normally the original, unaltered ego will naturally regain strength, reverting the object to its original form
